Vodafone Idea (Vi) is gearing up to enter the 5G mobile broadband market in March 2025 with plans designed to attract customers through competitive pricing. The move is seen as a direct challenge to the current market leaders, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which dominate the 5G space. Vi plans to roll out its 5G services in 75 major cities across 17 priority circles, focusing on urban and industrial hubs where data demand is high, as per a report by Economic Times.

Vi is reportedly planning to price its entry-level 5G plans up to 15% lower than those of Jio and Airtel. This pricing approach is aimed at appealing to price-sensitive customers and reclaiming lost market share. During a recent earnings call, CEO Akshaya Moondra hinted that the final pricing would be decided closer to the launch date.
“We are gearing up to launch 5G services and are committed to providing the best experience and price,” a Vi spokesperson said. The spokesperson also highlighted that Vi’s existing 5G spectrum in 17 priority markets is competitive enough to support an expansive rollout while enhancing its 4G coverage.

To prepare for the rollout, Vi has signed deals worth ₹30,000 crore with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung to upgrade its 4G and 5G networks. The company aims to deploy 75,000 5G base stations within three years, leveraging both 3.5 GHz and 1,800 MHz spectrum bands. These upgrades are already underway, with equipment supplies in progress and installations ramping up rapidly.
“Gear supplies are underway, and Vi is rapidly deploying 5G base stations,” industry executives familiar with the developments said.
As of September 2024, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel had already secured 148 million and 105 million 5G users, respectively, which underscores the competitive landscape Vi is entering.

Despite the ambitious plans, financial hurdles remain for Vi. The company continues to grapple with a significant debt burden, coupled with the challenge of maintaining ARPU growth in a highly competitive market. Additionally, Vi’s efforts to secure funding and manage operational costs are critical to ensuring its ability to execute a successful 5G rollout. Analysts suggest that while aggressive pricing can attract customers, it could also hamper the company’s Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) growth, which is vital for addressing its significant debt load.
To regain market share, Vi has been increasing dealer commissions and promotional spending. In FY24, its dealer payouts reached ₹3,583 crore, surpassing Jio’s ₹3,000 crore. These incentives reflect Vi’s commitment to strengthening its distribution network and enhancing customer acquisition.
Vi’s financial position has been bolstered by ₹24,000 crore in equity funding and an additional ₹25,000 crore in debt, supported by recent government measures, including the waiver of bank guarantee requirements.
“We’re excited to supercharge our network and add several thousand new sites by March 2025 to roll out 5G and revolutionize the digital experience for Vi users,” the spokesperson added.
